GRAIN BAG ROLLER DEMO DAY
District #30 A.D.D. Board held a Grain bag roller demo day at the North West Terminal on June 28. Producers were invited out to watch how the roller worked, and learn how to dispose of their Grain Bags. Harvey Kelly, Producer, says “it’s a real good idea. It’s a workable project to get rid of bags, as they need to be disposed of.”
The roller will be available free of charge to producers in District #30 A.D.D. Board, that consists of 10 RM’s. There is a collection site for the rolled bags once they are rolled in Unity. The site will only be open certain days. There will also be a large bag to dispose of Baler Twine at the site; Net Wrap will NOT be accepted. The bags will be picked up, and hauled to Merlin Plastic in Calgary, Alberta where they will be recycled.
Butch Boskill, Reeve of the RM of Round Valley says, “It’s a good idea. He is very interested in the project because he wanted to see bags disposed of properly. Maybe some day someone will make a business out of rolling the bags, as many farmers lack the time to do it. The project is a great place to start to get bags recycled.”
The recycling project is a 1 year pilot project funded by the ministry. To book the roller, to find out when the collection site will be open to drop offs, or to find out more information, please contact Chelsea Fawell, Secretary for District #30 A.D.D. board at 306 228 2893
Grain Bag Roller Demo Day – District #11
District #11 ADD Board held a grain bag roller demonstration day at the Great Sandhills Terminal on July 20, 2011. The terminal is located about one mile East of Leader and was chosen because it is a central location for the district. The public was invited to attend the demo day.
District #11 is composed of seven RM’s: Fox Valley, Deer Forks, Happyland, Clinworth, Miry Creek, Pittville, and Riverside. There are quite a few producers who have been using the grain bags and the response to the roller has been very positive.
The demonstration day started out rainy and cool, but warmed up and dried out in time for the demonstration to begin. A short discussion on how the pilot program will be conducted was given. Coffee and donuts wrapped up the morning.
To book the grain bag roller or to drop off rolled bags and twine to the collection site, please call ADD Board secretary Janis Tumback at (306) 689-2550.
Grain Bag Roller Demo Day – District #1
District #1 ADD Board currently participating in the recycling pilot project that was announced in March by the Federal and Provincial governments and the Provincial Council of ADD Boards.
District #1 ADD Board held two Grain Bag Roller Demo Days in the month of July. Our first was held in the Tribune area where a dozen producers were on hand to witness the demonstration on July 4th. Producers were invited out to watch the 6 grain bags we rolled, where they could see for themselves the benefits of how easy the machine worked, the benefits to recycling and how to dispose of these grain bags.
The roller is placed on a mobile trailer, where for free of charge it can be used and taken to various farm sites.
District #1 ADD Board, celebrating 64 years of local agricultural delivery of federal and provincial programs, is comprised of 6 active RM’s who thought it was in everyone’s best interest to invest in this green opportunity and support this pilot project. Southeast Saskatchewan has a lot of big farms still very active, and the merit to bringing in this roller was of great interest, both from an agricultural standpoint as well as an environmental standpoint.
“We have started a collection site for the collection of baler twine as well.” ADD Board President, Barry Harris said. Heavy duty plastic bags will be available shortly for producers to pick up and fill with their poly twine. “Our hope is to get the bag roller circulated to as many producers as possible, so that we can allow them to physically see the benefits of recycling.”
Our second demo day was held July 24th in Frobisher area, where again a handful of producers came out to see the roller in action as it compressed 10 bags in under two hours. Our biggest shortfall this year to exploring more demonstrations is that we have been struggling with flooding rivers and massive surface flooding since April. Most farmers have not put a seed in the ground as they either can’t get to it or it’s still under water.
There are a few farmers who were lucky enough to get crop in this year and are just finishing up with harvest. We expect that the call for the roller will likely find itself in demand again shortly.
For farmers who would like to view a video demo of the roller, please go to: www.saskpcab.com where you will find a link under Overview, Pilot Projects.
If you would like to inquire on the availability of the roller, please call the District One ADD Board Secretary, Valerie Pelton at the RM of Coalfields No. 4 office at 388-2323.
